I use dryer sheets everytime I put the towels in the dryer. I read online to try to wash towels with baking soda...didn't work!! I also read online to wash my towels with vinegar...that didn't work either!! Anybody have any other suggestions??? My towels always smell clean when they come out of the dryer but they start to stink again when they get wet.How do I get rid of the mildew smell out of my bath towels?
After you use the towels, hang them up to dry on a rack, but not in a damp bathroom. How do I get rid of the mildew smell out of my bath towels?
I asked this question, too a few mos ago, and the answer that worked for me.....use 1/2 the detergent you normally use, 1 cup clear ammonia, and wash in HOT water. Use whatever
softener you like. Smell is gone!!!
Mine have done that too.. I use bleach in my wash water, solves the problem.

I don't have a dryer (for environmental reasons) and can no longer hang towels outdoors because of air pollution, so I line-dry laundry indoors. Mildew in towels is a major problem in these circumstances, especially during the humid summer, but I have gotten rid of the problem completely simply by switching to thinner all-cotton towels that dry relatively quickly. Those big plush towels look nice on the rack, but they are breeding grounds for mildew, and I've never found a way to get it out of a towel once it's there -- even bleach does not seem to work. Cheap, thin towels are the way to go!
Borax in the wash with hot water and a good detergent. Machine dry hot.
Does your washing machine have a sanitary setting?
Try that with your regular detergent and OxyClean.
You are putting them in the hamper either damp or with damp clothes. Sitting damp for a day or two or more promotes mold growth, hence the odor. Get a separate mesh hamper for towels, or you can buy white towels like hotels do, and bleach them, or live with the odor. Your choice.
If you want to get out the odor of your towels now just boil them in a big pot of water. That will destroy the odor. They must boil for a few minutes.
